A kind of jazz like improvisation is part of the vast majority of my works. Even if I have a very specific intention and plan at the start, my work usually takes on a life of its own and surprises me. I have come to understand in the years of my practice that I work best with a very loosely coursed agenda. I start by taking a seed, whether a colour, or a snippet of collage text, a single element I find appealing- and giving it root with an objective in mind. But the objective must allow plenty of space for meandering, change, and the unexpected encounters that are inevitable along the way. I remain very flexible.
In this case, I was inspired by the free-wheeling buoyancy of big band music. The objective was something loose and colourful and joyful. Clarinet Marmalade was a great some from dixieland jazz exactly 100 years ago. The title was perfect, symbolizing the kind of playful sweetness I wanted to convey.
